My Teaching Philosophy

Know Your Students

Every student has their own unique strengths and weaknesses. From my coaching background, I learned that what works for one child might not work for another. I believe the best way to approach teaching any student is to play to their strengths while supporting their weaker areas. Getting to know each and every one of your students is crucial for furthering their achievements inside and outside of the classroom. Using this information, you can differentiate to accommodate and support all abilities.

Building Community

Learning best occurs in an environment that is safe, welcoming, and nurturing. To create this within a classroom is not a feat that can be achieved overnight. It takes time and care to build such a community, and it is critical that every student is and feels represented. Creating and setting community norms as a group sets expectations of mutual respect and understanding early on and brings every student to the same page. It is up to you as a teacher to act as a facilitator and guide them the rest of the way to achieving a collaborative and welcoming classroom.

Remote classrooms are no different and even require more time and effort to make sure each student is feeling connected to you and their classmates. Creating spaces for students to feel free to be themselves allows for not only academic but personal growth as well.

Continuous Growth

As an educator, my learning is never done. There is always room for improvement, and I think it is important to bring this growth mindset into the classroom. Students should know that everyone makes mistakes and to not be afraid to put themselves out there. No one is expected to get the answer right every time. Teachers should be placing an emphasis on the process, not the end result.
